On the eve of celebration of International Women’s Day, the Quezon City Government in partnership with UN Women launched the campaign of “Lighting The Way Towards Safe Cities” on March 7 at Quezon City Memorial Circle.
Representatives from districts of Quezon City and Philippine National Police, particularly women attended to show support on the event. The campaign aims to raise national awareness on the issue of street harassment and sexual violence against women and girls in public spaces. It also covers the LGBT Community whose members are also vulnerable to these incidents.

Several activities are lined-up for the campaign and celebration of the National Women’s Month throughout the city such as conduct trainings against sexual harassments as well as self-defense training led by the Safe Cities spokesperson, Glaiza De Castro.

According to Katherine Belen, Programme Head for UN Women Safe Cities, harassment is not a trivial annoyance; this is something that has tremendous effect on women.
Quezon City is the pilot city of the Safe Cities Global Initiative implemented by the UN Women in the Philippines and has increased fines for violators from P1,000 to P5,000 which also subject to increase more depending on severity of harassment.
One among the highlights of the event is the lighting ceremony of lanterns way up to the sky which made the night literally colorful!
Cookie Chua and Bayang Barrios also graced the event and performed songs for the attendees.
Let us support this campaign in order for us, women, mother and our girls will never feel any fear in every part of the city we live. We deserve to live equally and peacefully! Stop these harassments! Stop these violence! Stop Now!
Happy International Women’s Day!
A great activity reminding how women can empower everyone’s life.
Glad that we have this kind of activity and hope we achieved a safer city soon
Great to know that activities like this are being implemented. Street harassment should be highlighted, especially cat calling which usually happens to us everyday. This annoys me a lot and hopefully events like this would give more knowledge to the public.

Hi! Jing.
It’s a great post. You are absolutely right.Women should be empowered. I greatly appreciate you.
Thanks.
What a great women empowerment campaign it is! With the increasing rate of crimes where most victims are those innocent women, it is so nice that QC implemented a campaign that could lessen or better yet remove those alarming crime rates on the street. I hope all provinces and nearby cities will do the same!
The lanterns remind me of those scenes from Tangled hehe

What kind of violations are these?
I am a firm believer of this. As a woman I should not fear getting raped or mugged. This fear discourages a lot of women from traveling alone
I am a fan of Glaiza de castro. Glad that she’s there for the event. Go women empowerment!
This is such a beautiful event! I think it is important that women feel empowered, especially in times like these. I hope we have more campaigns and programs for women all over the Philippines.
