Filipino Young Designers Found Home at SM North Edsa

My interest in furniture design is not that extreme but I love seeing window displays  in malls. Somehow, it gave me an understanding with the basic accents and got curious about how those pieces came into life! For sure, every single masterpiece was a result of passion, hardwork and dedication of the designer.

It was my privilege to be part of media invites for the launch of “Home Is Where The Art Is” at  SM North EDSA’s Interior Zone. It’s a creative celebration of the design pieces by young Filipino designers supported by the country’s premier design and lifestyle event, Manila FAME.

The three young designers who graced the event were Micki Olaguer, Jim Torres and Viktoria Laguyo.

Micki Olaguer took up Industrial Design at UP College of Fine Arts where she graduated cum laude. She’s the daughter of Ramona Olaguer who’s also a jewelry designer. She bagged the top prize with her mother-of-pearl jewelry design at the Red Box Design Competition under the Fashion Accessories category at Manila FAME 2015

Jim Torres, RED BOX Cycle 1 grand winner for Home 2015.  An industrial designer based in Pampanga. His passion and enthusiasm in furniture design has led him to an apprenticeship with Industria Edition where he was able to express his design sensibilities. He also participated in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City in May 2016, and was featured in the Interior Design Magazine as part of the Emerging Designers in ICFF.

Viktoria Lagyo on the other hand is one among the finalists under the Furniture and Home Accents during Red Box Design Talents 2015. She showcased the modern feel of rattan on her design with a touch of her passion in ballet. She reflects ballet in one of her design particularly Piroutte – a term in ballet dance using only one leg to turn.

The RED BOX design program is a platform to discover and train young designers to become the next generation of movers and shakers in the home and fashion industries.

Let’s take a tour with the brilliant masterpieces of these young designers!

Viktoria with her Pirouette Furniture Collection

In this design, Viktoria mimicked the turns of a ballet dancer with repetitive circular form of the chair and the way the Rattan follows its metal frame. (Pirouette is a term in ballet where the dancer turn in one leg)

Tulle Lamp Collection by Viktoria Laguyo

(Tulle, a net-like fabric used in a ballet dancer’s costume is the inspiration behind the lamp collection)
